Following the remarks, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swiftly criticized Mitra, alleging she was defending terrorism. Amit Malviya, head of the BJP IT Cell, accused her of shifting blame from perpetrators, causing national outrage. The Congress party also condemned her statements, labeling them as anti-national.
