In a significant escalation of trade tensions, US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on Indian exports beginning August 1. This development comes amid ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries, prompting concerns and criticism from Indian political leaders.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi expressed her disappointment with the tariffs, describing them as 'unfortunate' during a time when the two nations are striving for a trade deal. Chaturvedi also demanded that the Indian central government's leadership provide a thorough explanation of the United States' unilateral decision.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, President Trump articulated his frustrations with India, citing high tariffs and non-monetary trade barriers, alongside India's military purchases from Russia. His comments followed similar hints of possible tariffs ranging from 20-25%, pending a conclusive trade agreement.
