In a robust defense, Congress MP KC Venugopal stood by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in the wake of the Supreme Court's objections to Gandhi's remarks about 'China-occupied Indian territory'. Venugopal questioned the criteria for being labeled a 'true Indian' during a press briefing.
Venugopal asserted that Gandhi's discourse mirrors the concerns of nationalist Indians, emphasizing the impasse faced in Parliament regarding questions on national interest. He argued that those spearheading critical national inquiries are unjustly branded anti-national.
The controversy intensified as Odisha Congress President Bhakta Charan Das criticized Justice Dipankar Datta for questioning Gandhi's 'Indianness,' following Gandhi's critique of the government's handling of Chinese aggression. Support also came from former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who noted that Gandhi's comments on Chinese incursions were based on publicly available information.
