Controversial Bills: A Blow to Indian Democracy?

Left parties strongly oppose new bills that allow for the removal of PMs, CMs, and ministers arrested on serious charges, seeing it as an attack on democracy and federalism. They argue the bills undermine elected governments and enable vendetta politics, destabilizing opposition-led states in India.

Left parties have decried the three new bills introduced in Parliament as an assault on India's democratic and federal fabric. The legislation allows for the removal of prime ministers, Union ministers, and chief ministers arrested on serious criminal charges for 30 consecutive days.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders criticized the bills, calling them draconian measures. M A Baby, CPI(M) general secretary, accused the Narendra Modi government of neo-fascist tendencies, urging all democratic forces to oppose the legislation.

CPI leaders argued that the new measures could be used for political vendetta, destabilizing state governments opposed to the ruling BJP. The legislation, they claim, allows misuse of central agencies against political opponents, endangering federalism and parliamentary democracy.
