Malta is set to officially recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday, as announced by the Prime Minister's Office. This move sees Malta joining Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, who made similar announcements on Sunday to encourage a two-state solution for peace in Gaza.

Despite delays due to a postponed U.N. conference, Malta's Prime Minister, Robert Abela, first declared the country's intentions for this diplomatic acknowledgment back in May. The Mediterranean island nation has long supported Palestinian causes, maintaining diplomatic ties with Israel while advocating for a two-state solution.

In a social media post, Abela highlighted Malta's recent aid to Gaza: a flour consignment that was delivered right before the state recognition announcement. He described this diplomatic move as 'historic' and reiterated Malta's commitment to peace in the region.
