On Friday, the news of former Union Minister Shivraj Patil's passing prompted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to express his condolences, highlighting Patil's vast knowledge and dedicated service in public affairs.
Patil, who was 90, died in his hometown of Latur, Maharashtra. Beginning his political career as the president of Latur municipality from 1966 to 1970, he rose through the ranks, serving two terms as MLA before winning the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times. Furthermore, he held the prestigious role of Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996.
Throughout his career, the Congress leader took on critical portfolios, including defence, commerce, and science and technology. As Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008, he resigned following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Patil's contributions extended beyond these roles as he also served as the governor of Punjab and the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
