The last rites of Shivraj Patil, a distinguished Congress leader and former Union minister, were conducted with full state honors in Latur, Maharashtra, on Saturday. Top political figures attended the ceremony to pay their respects.
Among those present were Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. Patil, a prominent Lingayat community member, was buried in a seated, meditative posture as per Lingayat customs, symbolizing the soul's immediate union with Shiva.
Patil, who died at 90 after a brief illness, had a political career spanning over 50 years. He held key positions in the Indian government, including roles in the Defence, Science, and Civil Aviation ministries. Notably, Patil took responsibility for the security lapses during the 26/11 attacks, resigning as Union Home Minister.
