In a fiery critique, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has denounced the ongoing demolition activities at Manikarnika Ghat in Banaras, describing them as a 'grave sin.' Using social media platform X, Vadra accused authorities of not facilitating progress, but rather dismantling the historical legacy crafted by revered figures like Ahilyabai Holkar.
Manikarnika Ghat holds deep religious and cultural significance, coupled with historical memories of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar. Vadra criticized the governmental 'renovation' efforts as a veil for commercial greed, suggesting that sacred sites are being transformed into commercial hubs, systematically undermining the temples and traditions that define Kashi.
The renovation initiative, which kicked off when Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation in July, aims to enhance accessibility and facilities at the ghat with an expected budget of Rs 17.56 crore. This master plan includes improved seating, accessibility, and connectivity, but faces opposition over fears that it may erase Kashi's cultural identity.
