Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra fiercely condemned Gujarat BJP President's derogatory remarks against senior Congress leader and MP Geniben Thakor, branding the comments as "utterly shameful and insulting." In a post on X, she denounced the BJP for its alleged pattern of disrespecting women both inside and outside Parliament.
Priyanka Gandhi accused the BJP government and its leaders of consistently making derogatory remarks against women despite claiming to promote women's empowerment. She criticized the ruling party for allegedly providing protection to individuals who demean women, calling it a reflection of the BJP's "anti-woman political attitude."
Expressing solidarity with Geniben Thakor, Priyanka Gandhi praised her courage and expressed pride in her strength. Similarly, Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP, accusing the party of holding a "distorted mindset" that undermines their proclaimed "Nari Vandana" slogan, revealing what he termed an "anti-woman ideology."
Rahul Gandhi emphasized that the BJP's respect for women is superficial, disappearing as soon as women challenge their authority. He warned of electoral repercussions, asserting that the insult to Geniben Thakor would not be forgotten by the electorate. This incident escalates ongoing political tensions between Congress and BJP in Gujarat, as Geniben Thakor rises as a pivotal figure for the Congress.
The controversy was ignited after BJP State President Jagdish Vishwakarma made a contentious comment, accusing Geniben Thakor of insulting the country's women under the Nari Vandana Act. This remark followed the failure of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, which aimed to implement a 33% reservation quota by 2029 elections. The bill fell short of the required votes for passage.
