The Lok Sabha's proceedings were severely disrupted on Monday as the opposition demanded an urgent debate on the situation in West Asia, preventing a resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla from being addressed. The House witnessed repeated adjournments amidst loud protests.
As the session resumed in the afternoon, opposition MPs persisted with their sloganeering, drawing criticism from the government and the Chair. Jagadambika Pal, overseeing the proceedings, insisted that decorum be maintained to allow the House to focus on the no-confidence motion against Birla, which was already on the agenda.
Pal accused the opposition of pursuing a political agenda and wasting taxpayer money estimated at Rs 9 crore per day by disrupting proceedings and holding the House 'hostage.' Despite the government's readiness to discuss the motion, the stand-off continued, with Birla not presiding until the issue was resolved.
