The political landscape in Assam faces turbulence following the unexpected resignation of MP Pradyut Bordoloi from the Congress, a move that has caught party members by surprise. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, reflecting on the loss, described Bordoloi as an influential figure within the Congress, whose departure signifies a major setback for the party.

Bordoloi's exit follows the footsteps of former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, who recently switched loyalties to the BJP after a 30-year stint with the Congress. With state elections looming, the Congress now faces the formidable task of strengthening its position against the incumbent BJP-led NDA government, helmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is seeking a third consecutive term.

The Election Commission of India has announced that Assam will join several states, including West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry, in holding assembly elections starting April 9. Both Assam and Kerala will conduct elections in a single phase, while West Bengal will carry out voting in two phases. The results are slated for announcement on May 4, adding pressure on political strategies amidst shifting alliances.
