Pinarayi: From Communist Cradle to Political Powerhouse

The village of Pinarayi in Kerala is a historical landmark for the state's communist movement, now led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. As the CPI(M) eyes another victory in the upcoming elections, opposition parties aim to challenge the traditional Left stronghold in the Dharmadam constituency.

Pinarayi, a village in Kannur district, is renowned for its pivotal role in Kerala's communist movement. Established in 1939 by influential leaders like E M S Namboodiripad, it remains the symbolic cradle of Left politics in the state.

This year, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, a figurehead of the CPI(M), seeks to secure an unprecedented third term for the Left Democratic Front in Kerala. Vijayan aims to win from his home constituency, Dharmadam, a CPI(M) stronghold since its formation in 2010.

However, the Congress and BJP aim to disrupt this tradition. While the CPI(M) promotes development efforts as a campaign focal point, both Congress and BJP challenge this narrative, critiquing unmet promises and highlighting ongoing local grievances.
