Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections: Political Strategies Unfold

The Maharashtra legislative council will see elections for nine seats and a bypoll on May 12, as terms for several members, including Uddhav Thackeray, end. The biennial elections for nine seats in the Maharashtra legislative council, including the seat vacated by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, are scheduled for May 12. A concurrent bypoll will also fill the seat left by Congress member Pradnya Satav, as announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday.

According to the schedule, voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on May 12, with the counting of votes occurring the same day at 5 pm. The process must be concluded by May 13, due to the term end of nine MLCs. Notable among the retiring members are Shiv Sena's Neelam Diwakar Gorhe and BJP's Sanjay Kishanrao Kenekar.

The ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is expected to secure the majority of seats, potentially up to nine out of 10, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) may secure just one. The bypoll, which commands a higher vote quota, is also projected to favor the BJP. The forthcoming elections have prompted discussions among political parties regarding nominations.
