Members of the pro-Bengali advocacy group Bangla Pokkho staged protests on Friday across the state, opposing the BJP-led Centre's alleged plans to implement delimitation proposals in BJP-ruled states.
General Secretary Garga Chatterjee vowed that the organization would continue its protests against the 'evil intent' of the delimitation bill, which aims to change parliamentary seat allocations. Participants in Kolkata and districts like Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas waved black flags and burned copies of the bill.
The actions coincided with the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill concerning the women's quota in Lok Sabha. Following the defeat, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju indicated that the government would not pursue the Delimitation Bill or the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, as they are linked to the failed amendment.
