A major political upheaval unfolded in Punjab as AAP leaders and workers staged widespread protests on Sunday. They demonstrated against seven Rajya Sabha members who defected to the BJP, a move that sparked outrage and effigy burning by disgruntled party members.
The protests spanned several Punjab locations, including Dera Bassi, Kharar, Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Bathinda, and Amritsar. Speaking from Jandiala Guru in Amritsar, Punjab Minister Harbhajan Singh fiercely criticized the defectors, accusing them of betraying Punjab's citizens and failing to address key state issues.
The political crisis came to a head on Friday, with seven of AAP's 10 Rajya Sabha MPs, predominantly from Punjab, including Raghav Chadha and Swati Maliwal, departing the party. They claimed AAP had strayed from its founding principles, values, and core morals, prompting their switch to the BJP.
