A special one-day session of the Punjab Assembly will be held on the occasion of Labour Day on May 1, with the state cabinet taking a decision to this effect on Tuesday. In order to pay homage to the working class of the state, the state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, gave its nod to convene the session, according to an official release. The development comes days after the ruling AAP's seven Rajya Sabha MPs, six of them from Punjab, quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and joined the BJP. Chief Minister Mann, in a post on X, announced the ''significant decision''. ''This one-day session will be dedicated to the hardworking labourers and artisans who make a vital contribution to the country's social and economic development,'' he said. He further wrote, ''As part of this historic initiative, representatives of labour unions will be invited to the House as special guests.'' The session will also witness serious discussions on the impact of changes in the MGNREGA scheme on the working class, along with broader national and international challenges affecting them, he said. ''In addition, during the session, other essential legislative business as determined by the Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly will be carried out in accordance with established procedures, ensuring that key decisions necessary for the state's development and the strengthening of democracy are undertaken,'' said Mann. Later, the Chief Minister's Office said the one-day session will pay tributes to the immense contribution of the working class in the socio-economic development of the country. The session will also discuss the emerging challenges to the working class in the wake of several developments at the national and international levels. ''The special session will be a homage to the millions of working-class people who have helped in the transformation of the country into a successful and vibrant democracy'', said the statement from the CM's office.
