Aung San Suu Kyi: From Prison to House Arrest Amid Myanmar's Turmoil
Myanmar's former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is set to be moved from detention to house arrest amid the ongoing civil conflict triggered by the 2021 coup. Although state media reported a commutation of her sentence, her son Kim Aris remains worried about her health and whereabouts.
Myanmar's former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, will be transferred to house arrest as state media reported Thursday. This transition comes after more than five years since she was ousted by a military coup in February 2021. The coup initiated a civil war that continues to ravage the nation.
The commutation of her sentence was broadcast by state-run MRTV, showing the first image of the Nobel laureate in years. Seated on a wooden bench, she was flanked by two uniformed guards. This move, however, has done little to pacify her family, especially her son Kim Aris, who expressed ongoing concern about his mother's well-being.
Suu Kyi, 80, with a 33-year sentence later reduced to 27 years, was convicted of various charges. Her prison term continues to be part of political maneuvers within the country. Meanwhile, Myanmar's junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, faces significant international pressure to release political prisoners.
