The Punjab Assembly has taken a significant step by unanimously approving a 15% increase in minimum wages for registered workers across both government and private sectors. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated that this decision serves as a tribute to the working class.
During a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Labour Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond presented the resolution on Labour Day. The session marked a historic occasion, convened after nearly 69 years, to honour the relentless efforts and sacrifices of workers, who are considered the backbone of society's and economy's progress.
The base rate of minimum wages had not been revised since 2012, despite ongoing increases in Dearness Allowance. The new wage hike sets a range from Rs 13,486 to Rs 16,601 per month for different skill levels, addressing past government neglect and offering genuine recognition to the workers.
