In a surprising twist, initial trends from West Bengal's election show significant challenges for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Key TMC figures find themselves trailing behind Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opponents, triggering concern among the party's supporters and prompting a cautious approach from leaders who had once envisioned a sweeping victory.
Specifically, in Cooch Behar district's Dinhata, TMC minister Udayan Guha faced a deficit of 6,259 votes against BJP's Ajay Ray after four counting rounds. Similarly, in Kolkata's Shyampukur, minister Sashi Panja trailed BJP's Purnima Chakraborty by 934 votes after two rounds, with 19 more remaining. These trends have sparked apprehension about the potential outcomes.
On a brighter note for the TMC, some solace is found in the Kolkata Port seat where city mayor and minister Firhad Hakim currently leads his Congress rival by 9,820 votes after the first counting round. As per the latest Election Commission statistics, the BJP maintains a lead in 104 seats, while the TMC holds onto 60.
