In a surprising turn of events in Assam, major opposition figures are trailing in the ongoing elections, according to data released by the Election Commission on Monday. Key leaders such as Debabrata Saikia and Akhil Gogoi have recorded fewer votes compared to their BJP rivals.
In Sivasagar district's Nazira seat, Congress leader Saikia is behind with 4,967 votes against BJP's Mayur Borgohain, who secured 11,607 votes after the second round. Similarly, Raijor Dal's Akhil Gogoi is trailing in Sibsagar, polling 3,262 against 5,171 votes bagged by BJP's Kushal Dowari.
Despite the setbacks, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal leads the race in Binnakandi, champing over AJP's Rejaul Karim Chowdhury by a margin of 2,869 votes. The preliminary results illustrate a challenging battle for Assam's opposition against the ruling BJP coalition.
