Akhil Gogoi, the Raijor Dal president, faces a challenging election battle in Assam's Sibsagar constituency. According to the Election Commission, Gogoi trails his BJP opponent, Kushal Dowari, following the second round of counting.
Gogoi, who had secured a win as an independent candidate from jail in the last assembly elections, now finds himself 1,534 votes behind his rival. As the vote tally stands, Gogoi has garnered 6,944 votes, while Dowari has received 8,478.
This electoral race is particularly significant for Gogoi, given his prominent role in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in December 2019, which led to his incarceration on sedition charges.
