In a significant political development in Assam, Congress president Gaurav Gogoi faced a defeat at the hands of BJP's Hitendranath Goswami for the Jorhat assembly seat. The loss highlights a major blow for the Congress as Gogoi, who is also the sitting MP of Jorhat, made his assembly election debut.
Gogoi secured 46,257 votes, coming up short against Goswami's 69,439 votes. This result allows Goswami to continue his hold on the seat, marking his third consecutive term. The victory represents continuity for the BJP, with Goswami having served the constituency both as an AGP MLA and under the BJP banner.
This election cycle in Assam saw polling conducted across 126 assembly segments on April 9. Gogoi’s defeat stands in contrast to his earlier victory in the 2024 Jorhat parliamentary election, where he won against BJP's Topon Kumar Gogoi by a significant margin of over 1,44,000 votes.
