The Congress party emerged victorious in the 2026 Keralam Assembly elections, driven by a widespread anti-incumbency wave against the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. Senior Congress leader K. C. Venugopal credited the win to the party's ability to tap into public dissatisfaction, aided by the popular appeal of figures like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. He described the LDF government as 'very corrupt,' emphasizing the electorate's desire for change.
In what has been termed as a 'historic' mandate, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor announced the win as 'tremendous,' highlighting that the scale of the victory exceeded expectations, signaling a considerable shift in the political dynamics of Kerala. With the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) gaining over 100 seats, the Left's decade-long hold appears to have waned, closing a significant chapter in India’s political history.
Despite speculations on leadership roles, Tharoor confirmed he would remain in Delhi as an MP, stressing the availability of capable leaders for the chief ministerial position. He remarked that while anti-incumbency was a key factor, the party's message of development and change resonated with voters. The ongoing vote-counting process, secured with tight measures, includes key states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
