BJP candidate Ratna Debnath has achieved a sweeping victory in the Panihati constituency, breaking the decade-long hold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) with a significant margin of 28,836 votes.

Debnath garnered 87,977 votes against TMC's Tirthankar Ghosh, who received 59,141 votes. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India's (Marxist) Kalatan Dasgupta lagged with just 24,032 votes. This result marks a major shift in the region's political landscape, with the BJP gaining dominance in a constituency long characterized by fierce regional competition.

Debnath's campaign was anchored in her personal tragedy—her daughter's murder at RG Kar Medical College—and touched a collective nerve by focusing on women's safety, justice, and holding the government accountable. She described the election as a fight for justice and women's safety in Bengal, transforming the campaign into a broader moral narrative. Her story reflects a dramatic political change in West Bengal, aligning with the BJP's rise to potentially becoming the largest party in the state, which has historically been a TMC stronghold.

Rooted in a poignant and deeply personal cause, Debnath's campaign not only brought her victory in Panihati but also signaled a changing tide in West Bengal's political narrative. The high voter turnout of 91.66% indicates increasing public engagement in this closely watched election.
