Kunki Chowdhury, a greenhorn candidate from the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), made headlines during the recent Guwahati Central constituency elections. Despite a spirited campaign, Chowdhury lost to the seasoned BJP politician Vijay Kumar Gupta by 61,921 votes.
The 27-year-old Chowdhury was embroiled in controversy when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened legal action against her parents over alleged beef consumption. This move placed Chowdhury under the spotlight for much of the campaign, yet she firmly dismissed the accusations.
As one of only 59 female candidates in the Assam elections, Chowdhury was the youthful face representing change in a Congress-led six-party opposition alliance. Her candidacy was framed as a race between 'continuity versus change', highlighting a generational and ideological shift in Assamese politics.
