Of the 59 female aspirants contesting the 126-member Assam Assembly, only seven emerged victorious, mirroring the results from 2021. This outcome underscores the persistent challenge of female underrepresentation in politics despite comprising 49.98% of Assam's 2.50 crore electorate.
The BJP increased its tally of female MLAs to four, and their allies further contributed one woman legislator each from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF). Of the 14 women's candidates fielded by Congress, only Baby Begum managed to secure a win, highlighting the declining female representation.
The BJP had a stellar performance, securing 82 out of 90 contested seats, while its allies, BPF and AGP, won 10 seats each. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog was among the victorious BJP candidates, retaining her constituency for the sixth time. The NDA is poised to form the government for the third consecutive term.
