Rising Tensions: TPLF Reclaims Control in Tigray
The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has reestablished its political control over Tigray, risking the return of conflict. Tensions escalated following accusations against Ethiopia's federal government of agreement violations. The volatile situation has drawn international calls for de-escalation, amid a backdrop of past deadly conflict in the region.
In a significant development, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) has taken back political control of the Tigray region, heightening fears of renewed conflict. The move disrupts the existing interim administration, defying a pivotal agreement with the Ethiopian federal government that concluded the devastating 2020-2022 civil war.
Accusations have flown from the TPLF, claiming that the federal government has stretched the tenure of the interim leader without consultation, inserted provocations, and withheld necessary funding. As tensions mount, an advisor to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has warned of potential catastrophic consequences if the situation remains unchecked.
The Tigray conflict, one of the deadliest in recent history, once involved neighboring Eritrea and resulted in widespread casualties and humanitarian crisis. The international community, including the EU and UK, is urging immediate actions to de-escalate the spiraling tensions and avert further escalation.
