Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele was voted out of power after losing a confidence vote in parliament. Manele received 22 votes to the opposing 26, amid tensions surrounding the nation's growing ties with China and internal political defections. The Governor General is set to formalize his removal.
In a dramatic political shift, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele was ousted from power on Thursday following a confidence vote in the country's parliament.
The vote saw Manele losing by a margin of 26 to 22, with two members abstaining, according to parliamentary speaker Patterson Oti. Post-vote, Manele urged lawmakers to collaborate for national betterment, emphasizing the need for unity to ensure the provision of essential services.
Manele will maintain his position until officially removed by the Governor General, representing Britain's King Charles, the nation's head of state. Strategically located northeast of Australia, the Solomon Islands has gained prominence due to enhancing ties with China, drawing global attention since a China security pact in 2022. Manele's ouster follows defections of several ministers to the opposition and his contentious decision to avoid recalling parliament for a earlier confidence vote.
