In a significant development in Puducherry's political landscape, V Vaithilingam has resigned as the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief. This decision comes in the wake of the Congress' disappointing performance in the April 9 Assembly elections. Vaithilingam, who's been at the helm since 2023, accepted moral responsibility for the defeat.

The Congress party, in alliance with the DMK and VCK, contested in 16 out of the 30 available seats but only managed to secure a victory in the Oussudu constituency. Vaithilingam's own loss in the Thattanchavady constituency further fueled his decision to step down.

The electoral scene was dominated by the AINRC-led NDA, with N Rangasamy set to assume leadership for the fifth time. The NDA coalition won a notable majority, securing 18 out of 30 seats, solidifying its influence in the union territory's political affairs.
