Cong has become 'Muslim League-type party' in Assam: Badruddin Ajmal

AIUDF President Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday said Congress has become a Muslim League-type party as most of its MLAs in Assam are from the minority community. Addressing a press conference, Ajmal slammed the Congress and its leader Pawan Khera for allegedly trying to distance from the Muslim community while defending against the BJPs assertion that most of the newly elected members in the recent assembly polls in five states are from the minority community.

AIUDF President Badruddin Ajmal on Thursday said Congress has become a ''Muslim League-type party'' as most of its MLAs in Assam are from the minority community. Addressing a press conference, Ajmal slammed the Congress and its leader Pawan Khera for allegedly trying to distance from the Muslim community while defending against the BJP's assertion that most of the newly elected members in the recent assembly polls in five states are from the minority community. ''Why have you not been able to ensure representation of both communities? Why could you not win even a few seats from Assamese areas? This shows that your party has declined and turned into a Muslim League-type party,'' he added. The newly elected AIUDF MLA suggested Khera to revisit history and study Congress work culture. ''If you are not aware, I can write and send it to you, who all contributed to India's freedom and who all built the Congress party,'' Ajmal said. The Congress party was formed jointly by Hindus and Muslims, and that was its secular character, he added. ''There was a time when Congress meetings would take place alongside those of Jamiat Ulama, and the resolutions passed by Jamiat would be adopted by the Congress. That situation no longer exists today,'' Ajmal said. The AIUDF chief questioned Khera, saying that he does not have the right to make such statements. ''They should introspect, consult their seniors and understand history. They may not be aware of it yet due to their age,'' he added. Khera on Wednesday accused the BJP of giving communal colour to votes cast in polls and said it has a total of 664 MLAs across the country, out of which only about 12 per cent are Muslim legislators, more or less mirroring the demographic composition of the community. Out of the 19 Congress candidates who have won in Assam, 18 are from the Muslim community, and only one is Hindu.
