Diplomatic Duel: Congo and Rwanda's Race for OIF Leadership

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda are locked in a diplomatic face-off over the leadership of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF), as both nations nominate candidates just as the deadline approaches this Friday. The OIF, representing over 320 million French speakers across 90 states, is a significant platform.

This contest arises amid ongoing conflicts with Rwanda-backed rebels in eastern Congo. Rwanda denies supporting these insurgents, despite allegations. Mediation by the United States, Qatar, and the African Union has, so far, failed to resolve the conflict fueling tensions.

Incumbent OIF secretary general, Rwanda's Louise Mushikiwabo, seeks a third term, with Congo nominating Juliana Lumumba. Additional candidates include Mauritania's Coumba Ba and Romania's Dacian Cioloș, with the new leader to be chosen at a summit in Phnom Penh this November.
