In a significant move, Maharashtra's Nanded district administration has successfully thwarted 36 child marriages over the last month. This success comes on the heels of a concerted drive by the Women and Child Development Department from April 12 to May 13.
Officials revealed that critical interventions were initiated following multiple complaints registered on the 1098 Childline, a 24-hour emergency toll-free service for children needing care and protection. Swift action, including counseling, awareness campaigns, and on-ground verification prevented the solemnization of these illegal unions.
Furthermore, the administration is ensuring the welfare of these young girls by presenting them before the Child Welfare Committee. The district administration underscores the stringent enforcement of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, urging citizens to aid in combating child marriage by contacting the helpline with any relevant information.
