The Congress party appears set to achieve victories in all four municipal corporations across the state, according to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. On Friday, during a rally in Solan on the final day of campaigning for urban local body elections, Sukhu remarked on BJP's internal divisions, suggesting that opposition leader Jai Ram Thakur might face removal due to escalating tensions within the party.
The elections, scheduled for May 17, involve 51 urban local bodies, including four key municipal corporations—Solan, Mandi, Palampur, and Dharamshala—25 municipal councils, and 22 nagar panchayats. While party symbols will be used in municipal corporation elections, municipal council and nagar panchayat polls will not. In Solan, Sukhu addressed concerns about rural areas merged into the municipality, assuring potential de-mergers post-elections. He also announced plans to move overhead wires underground in Solan's market area.
Criticizing the BJP for escalating fuel prices, Sukhu emphasized the negative effects of such increases on common citizens. He argued that rising fuel costs, amid the Prime Minister's call for austerity, could hinder revenue generation efforts. Highlighting the importance of public spending, Sukhu urged voters to be mindful of these economic impacts when deciding their votes in the upcoming municipal polls.
