The Centre has approved inter-cadre deputation of Ladakh Police chief Mukesh Singh to Manipur, according to an official order.

Singh is a 1996-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories) cadre.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the inter-cadre deputation of Singh to Manipur for a period of three years as a special case in public interest, an order, dated May 21, by the Personnel Ministry said.

He is likely to be appointed as Manipur Police chief, officials said.

The vacancy was necessitated following the appointment of Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh as Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat.

The secretary (security) is the administrative head of the Special Protection Group (SPG) that provides security to the prime minister and members of his immediate family residing with him at his official residence.

Manipur has been witnessing incidents of ethnic violence, which started after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribes status, since May 3, 2023.

It has left at least 260 people dead, besides displacing thousands of residents.
