In a significant development, Syria's transitional leadership has uncovered remnants of an underground chemical weapons program tied to former president Bashar al-Assad. The discovery includes raw materials and munitions akin to those deployed in previous fatal gas attacks during the protracted civil war, a Syrian official revealed to Reuters on Tuesday.

This revelation comes as Syrian authorities have detained 18 individuals allegedly involved in orchestrating Assad's chemical weapons initiatives. Among the arrested are high-ranking military, political, and technical officials, according to Mohamad Katoub, Syria's permanent representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.

Katoub's statements underscore the ongoing efforts by Syria's transitional government to hold former regime elements accountable and dismantle any remaining infrastructure related to chemical warfare.
