The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, labeling him a 'hypocrite' who publicly supports Other Backward Classes (OBC) rights while not promoting OBC leaders to significant positions within the party.
The comment follows the recent replacement of Siddaramaiah, an OBC leader, by D K Shivakumar as the chief minister in Karnataka. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla emphasized that several Congress leaders, such as V D Satheesan and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, do not belong to the OBC community. He criticized Congress for talking about caste issues while their actions do not reflect their rhetoric. Poonawalla accused Congress of failing to ensure substantial OBC representation, contrasting it with BJP's own leadership.
Poonawalla pointed out the inconsistency in Congress's approach, contrasting it with BJP's elevation of an OBC leader to the prime ministerial position. He further alleged that the Congress party has historically targeted and disrespected backward class leaders while siding against the principles of prominent OBC figures.
