Former Premier Bids for 2020 Presidency

William Lai, the former premier is bidding for the 2020 presidency. The leader of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Lai had to step down in January 2018, following the nine-in-one elections.

According to reports, if two or more DPP candidates run for the presidency, they will be given a platform to make their cases. Then there will be a national poll to determine who will represent the party in the 2020 elections.

Wu Den-yih, the chairman of Kuomintang (KMT) Party said they will set aside their nomination process and directly nominate a candidate to improve the party's chances of the election win. Two party members, Eric Chu who is a former KMT mayor and Wang Jin-pyng, the country's longest serving Legislative Speaker have expressed candidacy for the upcoming presidency.

Meanwhile, President Tsai Ing-wen will be standing for re-elections despite calls from hardline independence activists within the party to stand down. She said its natural for a sitting president to do more for the country and finish things on their agenda.
