MNF triumphs in lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) emerged victorious in both the lone Lok Sabha constituency and the by-poll to the Aizawl West-I assembly seat, as the counting concluded late on Thursday, election officials said. MNF nominee C Lalrosanga, a former broadcaster who retired as Director General of Doordarshan, defeated his nearest rival -- combined candidate of the opposition Zoram People's Forum (ZPM) and Congress Lalnghinglova Hmar (Independent)-- by a margin of 8,140 votes.
Lalrosanga (62) secured 2,24,286 votes, while Hmar (42), a sports journalist and leader of the state football association, bagged 2,16,146. The total valid votes polled, including NOTA was 4,99,621. BJP candidate and former minister Nirupam Chakma secured 28,707 votes, followed by People's Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) candidate TBC Lalvenchhunga, who got 13,323 votes.
Independent candidates Lalhriatrenga Chhangte and Lalthlamuani (the lone woman nominee) bagged 12,675 and 1,975 votes, respectively. In the by-poll to the Aizawl West-I, Zothantluanga of the MNF defeated his ZPM-Congress combine rival Lalbuanga Sailo by a margin of 7,035 votes.
Zothantluanga secured 12,309 votes out of the total polled (18,154), while his nearest rival Lalbuanga Sailo (Independent) of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM)-Congress combine got 5,279 votes. Rev Zaichhawna Hlawndo, (Independent), bagged 443 votes, while 128 were NOTA.
