Political parties in Telangana, including the ruling TRS, celebrated the 73rd Independence Day here on Thursday by hoisting the national flag and distributing sweets. TRS working president K T Rama Rao, state Congress president N Uttam Kumar Reddy, state BJP chief K Laxman hoisted the national flag in their respective party offices.

AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi unfurled the tricolor at Madina Circle in the city, while the party Joint Secretary Hussain Anwar hoisted the National Flag at the party headquarters. Addressing party workers, after unfurling the tricolor, Telangana Congress Chief said there was a need to make people aware of the history of Kashmir and Jawaharlal Nehru's role, at a time when the BJP was portraying the former Prime Minister in a poor light.

He also asked the party men to work for the party's victory in the coming municipal polls. At the BJP office, Laxman said his party would like to assure people that the "Telangana liberation day" (September 17, 1948, when the erstwhile state of Hyderabad was merged with the Indian Union) would be celebrated officially under the leadership of BJP president Amit Shah.

TDP police bureau member Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy, who hoisted the National Flag at the party office, said it would move ahead undeterred by the desertion of senior leaders. TDP has been hard hit after several party leaders switched over to the ruling TRS, Congress and others.

The party had a pre-poll alliance with the Congress for the Assembly polls held in December last year, but it managed to win only two of the total 119 seats.
