Mumbai’s Rising Fire Incidents: Alarming Safety Concerns

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde revealed that Mumbai witnessed 13,000 fire incidents in the last three years, resulting in 65 deaths and 473 injuries. These incidents prompted fire safety audits, revealing deficiencies now addressed in 278 buildings. Shinde emphasized the need for fire evacuation lifts in tall structures.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has brought to light a worrying trend in Mumbai—13,000 fire incidents over the past three years, claiming 65 lives and injuring 473 people. The revelation came in response to a query by Congress legislator Bhai Jagtap at the state legislative council.

Shinde highlighted that until January this year, these alarming incidents necessitated the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to carry out fire safety audits across 1,270 buildings. Deficiencies were found in 278 structures, which have now been addressed, according to a BMC report.

Furthermore, Shinde emphasized the implementation of mandatory fire evacuation lifts in buildings exceeding a height of 70 meters, underscoring the importance of stringent safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
