Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday urged Punjab's farmers to plant at least four saplings in their fields to enhance the state's green cover.
He made this appeal during a meeting to review a forestation drive, according to an official statement. Mann emphasized it is critical to increase the state's forest cover. The government has set a target of planting around 3 crore trees, with a massive campaign starting soon, Mann said.
Farmers can transform this campaign into a public movement, just as they have helped achieve self-reliance in food production, he added. He suggested that each farmer should plant at least four saplings around tube wells in their fields. With 14.01 lakh tube wells across the state, this could significantly enhance the forest cover, Mann noted. The state government already covered 3.95 lakh tube wells last year, planting 1.2 crore saplings. This year's target is 3 crore saplings.
Mann also requested deputy commissioners to identify vacant government land in their districts for plantation drives.
