Heavy Rains Cause Havoc in Nilgiris District

Heavy rains and strong gales in the Nilgiris district have uprooted trees, damaged cars, and caused power outages. Schools in four taluks were declared closed due to the inclement weather. Despite the damages, no injuries were reported. Authorities are working on clearing roads and restoring normalcy.

Heavy and incessant rains have wreaked havoc in the Nilgiris district, leading to the uprooting of trees and widespread power outages. The administration declared a holiday for schools in four taluks on Monday due to the adverse weather conditions.

District collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru announced the closure of schools in Udhagamandalam, Kundah, Coonoor, and Kotagiri. The intensified southwest monsoon has been causing significant disruptions in this tourist hotspot over the past six days.

Strong gales accompanying the rains have caused considerable damage, uprooting trees and damaging at least 30 cars around Udhagamandalam. About 30 EB poles were also reported damaged. A TNSTC bus bound for Chennai was partly damaged by a falling tree, though no injuries were reported. Similar incidents have been occurring, affecting traffic and causing extended power outages.

The civic authorities are actively working to clear the fallen trees from the roads, and the district administration has alerted police fire and rescue services to be ready for emergencies. Notably, Coonoor, Kullakamby, and Kotagiri zones have received more cumulative rainfall than the decennial average.
