Scorching Temperatures and Wildfires Threaten the U.S. West

Millions of Americans across the western U.S. brace for extreme heat and wildfires, with temperatures soaring past 110°F in places like Phoenix and Las Vegas. Evacuations have been prompted in several areas, including California and Montana, as wildfires continue to spread amid dry and windy conditions.

Millions of Americans across the western U.S. are bracing for scorching temperatures and wildfires, with the National Weather Service issuing excessive heat advisories for over 20 million people. Temperatures are expected to exceed 110°F in cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas, while places as far north as Billings, Montana, will see highs of 107°F.

'Be heat smart and drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks, and check-in on family and/or neighbors that don’t have a means of cooling off,' the National Weather Service in Montana advised on X. The combination of excessive heat and dry, windy conditions has amplified the risk of wildfires in the drought-stricken region.

In California, the Maria wildfire has grown to 45 acres, prompting multiple evacuation orders. While it's unclear how many households were evacuated, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported 20 other active fires burning across the state. Similar conditions are leading to wildfires in Oregon and Arizona, as well as in Canada's Alberta Province, where evacuations have also been ordered.
