Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) councillors are pushing for a transparent and swift transition to an LED street light system under the ongoing smart city project. The council meeting turned chaotic as opposition members questioned the delays and secrecy surrounding the project.
Opposition Congress member Vinayraj accused the MCC of slowing down the LED street light component, which he said should have been completed by now. He alleged that MCC might be deceiving Mangaluru residents by withholding information and delaying the project.
Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur, countering the allegations, blamed frequent workforce transfers mandated by the Congress-ruled state government for the delays. A senior MCC official noted that the city could reduce its power consumption by 50% once all 65,000 street lights are converted to LED lamps, with plans to accomplish this by November.
