Harrowing scenes of dead bodies in sitting and lying positions inside destroyed houses could be seen as rescue operations resumed in the landslide-devastated Mundakkai hamlet in Kerala's Wayanad district on Wednesday morning.
The rescuers reached many inland areas, which were initially cut off, on Wednesday morning only.
According to visuals aired on TV, army personnel were seen breaking the tin roof of a submerged house to retrieve trapped bodies.
A local man described seeing mud-covered bodies in sitting and lying positions inside a house.
Authorities have not officially commented on the situation yet.
Various rescue agencies resumed operations early in the morning, searching for people suspected to be trapped in the landslide that has killed at least 123 and injured 186.
Concerns about more fatalities arose, as several people might still be trapped under the debris.
The landslide, triggered by torrential rains, struck the Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha hamlets early on Tuesday.
Wayanad, known for its forests, hills, and waterfalls, is a diverse district home to indigenous tribal communities.
