The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has released a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) focused on the proper de-silting of drains, operation of pumps, and precautionary measures to avoid electrocution. This comes after the tragic death of three UPSC aspirants in Old Rajinder Nagar due to flooding.
The SOP mandates that silt removed from drains must be disposed of at authorized dumping grounds within two hours, especially during high-intensity rains that have been frequent this monsoon, leading to severe waterlogging.
Recent incidents of deaths due to electrocution and flooding triggered the PWD to emphasize the importance of continuous de-silting and removal of encroachments. Overflowing drains must be promptly cleared of blockages, and all drains should remain de-silted using necessary manpower and machinery. Independent monitoring teams will verify de-silting efforts, and all safety measures should be enforced in vulnerable locations to prevent future tragedies.
