Tiger Population in Sunderbans Set for Growth Amid Conservation Efforts
The number of Royal Bengal Tigers in the Sunderbans is projected to increase, thanks to a healthy prey base and anti-poaching initiatives. The 2022 census recorded 101 tigers, up from 88 in 2018. Efforts to maintain flora diversity and prevent human encroachment are also underway.

The number of tigers in the Sunderbans is likely to rise in the next census due to a robust prey base and no threat of habitat saturation, according to a senior forest official. The 2022 census recorded 101 Royal Bengal Tigers in West Bengal's Sunderbans.
Chief Wildlife Warden Debal Roy explained that the current count of 101 tigers in 2022 is far from the area's carrying capacity of 4,200 sq km. ''The capacity in Sunderbans, in terms of tigers per 100 sq km, suggests a room for growth,'' Roy told PTI. The forest department ensures a regular supply of prey and has implemented anti-poaching measures.
Using camera trap technology, the 2022 census counted 101 tigers, up from 88 in 2018. The ongoing census will include around 1,500 automated cameras at 730 locations. Efforts to strengthen forest fencing, maintain floral diversity, and prevent illegal entry are also aimed at supporting the tiger population.
