Tropical Storm Debby Intensifies, Emergency Measures in Florida

Tropical Storm Debby is expected to become a hurricane earlier than forecasted, impacting Florida with strong winds and significant storm surges. Tropical Storm Debby is projected to intensify into a hurricane by Sunday night, sooner than earlier predictions, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). This shift in timeline comes amidst a forecasted uptick in Atlantic hurricane activity for the 2024 season, which began on June 1.

In preparation for Debby's impact, Governor Ron DeSantis has mobilized 3,000 National Guard troops and issued emergency orders across most Florida cities and counties. Evacuations have commenced in parts of Pasco Hernando and Citrus along the Gulf Coast.

The storm, which became a named tropical storm on Saturday night, was situated around 230 miles south-southwest of Tampa at the last update, moving at a speed of 14 mph. It's anticipated to strengthen significantly as it approaches Florida, bringing potential storm surges up to 7 feet and heavy rains.
