A lioness tragically died after falling into an open well at Itariya village in Gujarat's Botad district, a forest official reported on Wednesday.

The incident was discovered on Tuesday night, prompting forest officials to rush to the scene early Wednesday, said Range Forest Officer (Gadhada) IS Prajapati.

Prajapati stated that the lioness's carcass was retrieved and taken to an animal care center for a post-mortem examination.

'A lioness fell into an open, unprotected well belonging to a farmer at Itariya village in Gadhada taluka of the district on Tuesday night,' Prajapati confirmed.

Numerous deaths of Asiatic lions due to open wells near the Gir sanctuary have been reported. In 2022 and 2023 alone, 238 Asiatic lions died in Gujarat, with 29 deaths attributed to unnatural causes such as vehicle collisions or well falls.

Minister of State for Forest and Environment, Mukesh Patel, informed the state assembly that Rs 278 crore has been spent on lion conservation and various preventive measures, including appointing trackers, installing chainlinks around railway tracks, and constructing parapets on open wells.

The last census in 2020 recorded 674 Asiatic lions in Gujarat.
