India Highlights Challenges of CCUS Implementation

The feasibility of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) remains uncertain, making it currently unviable for retrofitting thermal power units in India. The need for climate finance, technology transfer, and international collaboration is crucial for significant CCUS implementation, according to Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh.

The economic, technical, and political feasibility of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) is highly uncertain, making it an unviable option for retrofitting existing thermal power units, the government informed Parliament.

In response to a question by YSRCP MP Ayodhya Rami Reddy Alla, Union Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh stated that India requires substantial climate finance and technology transfer, along with effective international collaboration, to implement CCUS on a significant scale.

The minister also emphasized that developed countries need to lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing financial and technological support to developing countries.
